Answer:

A: The shoemaker's bench and tools brought back terrible memories for Dr. Manette.

Explanation:

In Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities", the story revolves around the character of Dr. Alexandre Manette who had been reunited with his daughter after being in captivity for 18 years. The new life that they lead in London after their past life in Paris sets the plot of the story in these two places.

The given passage is from Book 2 chapter VI where Mr. Jarvis Lorry had went to the residence of the Manettes in London. While waiting for the doctor, he walked around the house and 'toured' the house. Once in the bedroom of the doctor, he found that the room <em>"looked the same as it had on the fifth floor of that miserable house near the wine shop in the suburb of Saint Antoine in Paris"</em>. The very last line of the passage shows Mr. Lorry exclaiming why the doctor still <em>"keeps... the reminder of his sufferings about him"</em>, which suggests that they (the shoemaker's bench and tools) bring back terrible memories for the doctor.

Thus, the correct answer is option A.

I would say A, because the shoemaker's bench is the last thing referenced before the dialogue. it doesn't really sound like he's concerned abt the wife bc he seemed fond of the stuff that was like a reminder of her (D) and it's not the house that looks the same as paris, just that the shoemaker's bench didn't change (B). idek how to say C is wrong but
