Quebec, was the first permanent French settlement in the new world, founded by Samuel de Champlain in the year 1608. St. Augustine was the first permanent European settlement of the current day United States, founded by Pedro menéndez in the year 1565. Montreal is a large city in Canada founded after Jacques Cartier led the expedition that discovered the St. Lawrence river.
