Some of the factors that contribute to person become refugees are:

 • Because there are wars and unsafe political situations.
 • There is a compulsion to escape from persecution. For example, because of the difference in religion, race, ethnicity, nationality, politic, or membership of certain social groups.
 • Because of the factors of natural disasters, like climate change or environmental damage that make a region uninhabitable. For example, the areas affected by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, lack of water supply, etc.
 • There is an outbreak of a dangerous disease or virus.
 • There is a personal conflict, with family or relatives that forces someone to go away from their country.

Further explanation

The 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees defines refugees as:

"People who are caused by fears of persecution, which are caused by reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in certain social groups and political parties, are outside their nation and do not want protection from their country."

The UN agency that oversees the welfare of refugees is UNHCR. It promotes protection activities and assistance programs for refugees and asylum seekers. This program is to ensure the basic needs of them are fulfilled, as long as they are waiting for the most appropriate long-term solutions.
