What are some examples of positive and negative connotations?
zhuklara [117]

Positive connotations are words that carry implications that are positive to those you were speaking to or who was reading what you wrote.

Positive examples of connotations:

Bold: To call someone bold is to portray them favorably and to convey their willingness to go to considerable measures to carry things through. However, it's also feasible that this may be interpreted negatively by others, who could label them as brazen.

Stylish:  Being regarded as stylish means that a person's sense of style is highly appreciated by others. The opposite would be if they perceived that person as faddish instead of stylish. It would imply that they are just people who love to follow the current trends and do not actually have their own sense of fashion.

Strong-willed - this person is someone who is unyielding in their convictions and will not readily back down to comply with people who demand things of them. The opposite of this would have to be obstinate, which implies that they would change their mind about their choices no matter what.

Negative connotations

A blight can imply that one should feel sorry for themselves because of their appearance. These comments should typically be viewed as offensive because they are truly intended to denigrate the receiver. However, certain terms have a rather hip sound to them and should not be confused with actual negative connotations.

Examples:

Scrawny: Being scrawny would suggest that the individual is dangerously thin and appears to be anorexic. The inverse would be if they were labeled skinny. Since it might imply that they were overweight previously and are now skinny, some people would even regard this word as a complement.

Mushy: A person that is mushy is one who is too corny or overly sentimental for their own good. The softer version of this term would have to be sentimental and easily reads the mood. This can make it easier to be around them because you would know if they have any kind of hidden agenda.
