Read the excerpt from Black Boy. Then my father was called; he came forward jauntily, smiling. He tried to kiss my mother, but s

he turned away from him. I only heard one sentence of what he said. “I’m doing all I can, Your Honor,” he mumbled, grinning. It had been painful to sit and watch my mother crying and my father laughing and I was glad when we were outside in the sunny streets. Back at home my mother wept again and talked complainingly about the unfairness of the judge who had accepted my father’s word. What societal norm of the early twentieth century does this excerpt reflect?

In the whole passage, the socialistic norm was that the at that point of time men were more trustworthy and capable.

Then, the men were treated highly, and the women were treated as a lower ground of the society.

There was no equality for the women in that society. They have to bear the demands and violence of the men.

stellarik [79]

Answer:

1. I Ana had known the answer, she would have raised her hand.

2. Mr. Diaz would have been on time to work if he had taken the bus.

3. If Angela hadn't brought a jacket, Luis would have given her his coat.

4. Sofia would have bought a new cell phone if she had had enough money.

5. If Mrs. Garza had known how cold it was outside, she would have worn a coat.

6. If Adriana had realized how tired she was, she wouldn't have stayed out so late.

7. If Javier had checked his watch, he would have known how late it was.

8. If we had known how late the bus was going to be, we wouldn't have waited for it.

Explanation:

This question requires knowledge about the third conditional.

The third conditional is used in English to express hypothetical situations in the past. In other words, we are imagining possibilities about something that has already happened. For example, suppose you forgot to bring some money with you. Because of that, you weren't able to buy a jacket you saw that was on sale. You can imagine how things would have been: "If I had brought some money, I would have bought that jacket."

The structure of the third conditional is the following:

if + had (not) + past participle, would/could/might (not) + have + past participle

The if clause will not necessarily be the first one every time. Take a look at the examples below:

- She would have told you if she had known how important it was to you.

- If you had talked to me about it, we could have found a better way to do it.

- If Mario hadn't moved away, he and Dana would have gotten married.
