France established Asian colonies in Vietnam and Cambodia, as these were part of French Indochina.

French Indochina was a federation of protectorates in Southeast Asia that was part of the French Colonial Empire. It was formed by a federation of three Vietnamese regions (Cochinchina, Tonkin and Annam) together with the protectorates of Laos and Cambodia.
