The application of this idea to the medical field leads him to propose what is today called CT scan. At this time, Hounsfield ignored that Allan McLeod Cormack established the mathematical theory describing such a device. Cormack and Hounsfield each received half the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1979 for the development of computer-assisted tomography.
