Why did the export of jute and cotton increase in India?

History

The rise of a jute manufacturing industry in India presents a case where, with respect to the industrial production of jute and its share in the world market, a colony out-stripped an imperial metropolis (Dundee, once known as "Juteopolis"). Ironically, this rise contributed to only limited growth of industrialization and capital accumulation in India. This study underscores the complex connection between colonialism and development by highlighting the interplay of forces that operated in the context of changing patterns of global trade and economy. It also outlines the role played by Indian raw jute in the growth of industrialization and capital accumulation in Dundee and the critical role of Indian jute products in balancing trade in the British empire. How was the nullification crisis resolved.

Answer:

A compromise tariff bill was passed in 1833

Explanation:

The tariffs bills of 1828 and 1832 had so outraged the south that the state of South Carolina threated to succeed from the Union and John C. Calhoun resigned as vice president of the United States.

The tariffs of 1828 had raised import duties to 62% of the value of the imports. These duties applied to 92% of all imports. The tariffs were designed to protect factories in the Northern states from competition from England and other European countries.

The results of these import taxes were devastating to the South. England could not afford to buy as much Southern Cotton. The South had to import almost everything as there was little manufacturing in the south. Cost went up by almost 50% and income went down. The money raised by these taxes was spent mainly in the North on railroads, roads and canals to help northern industry.

As a result of the new fugitive slave law from the Compromise of 1850:
Eva8 [605]

As a result of the new fugitive slave law from the Compromise of 1850:

  • A.) Many Northerners who were not abolitionists were outraged at the sight of people being forced  to return to slavery.

The new fugitive slave law of 1850 was an effort by the Southerners to ensure that the slaves remained in their control.

The law was meant to reward people who were able to capture fleeing slaves and return them to their masters.

This new law did not go well with the Northerners who were unhappy to see slaves being subjected to a life of misery in the hands of their masters.

Abolitionists increased their efforts to protest the end of slavery. Those involved in the Underground Railroad also doubled their efforts.

So, this law was met with widespread resistance.
