<u>Pleasant earned a reputation as the “Mother of Human and Civil Rights in California"</u>

<u> Pleasant  states that she was born a slave to a voodoo priestess and the Virginia Governor's youngest son, James Pleasant.</u>

<u>Married James Smith, where they both worked on the Underground Railroad. J. Smith died. She then married John James Pleasant</u>

<u>During the 1880s, a smear campaign by the widow of Thomas Bell damaged Mrs. Pleasant’s reputation.  Local newspapers began to taunt her with the pejorative title “mammy,” which she reportedly hated.  She never recovered her prestige from this campaign.</u>

<u>Died on Jan. 4, 1904</u>
