well, not all animals posses self-awareness but some animals do, its because they have feelings for their offsprings or parents. They were born to learn how to stick by their adult and the adult caring for it, cleaning for it, feeding it and so their offspring pick up the actions and do it to their offspring making them having self-awareness for them. just like humans XD
