The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the most important battle of the American Civil War. For three days (July 1-3, 1863) , the army of the South attacked positions held by the North troops along a lengthy front in Gettysburg, but the latter resisted the onslaught. The last and decisive offensive was the famous Pickett's charge, which was painfully unsuccessful and a bloody affair. The Confederation suffered heavy casualties and its forces were rejected by the Union Army. Gettysburg was a major,  strategic defeat. It was a turning point in the conflict. The South lost the strategic initiative. The casualties recorded are the highest of the whole Civil War.
