The Islamic Golden Age came to an end because of the invasion from the Mongols. The Mongols were a growing force that turned out to be a super power, with Genghis Khan being the leader of the empire. Genghis Khan actually didn't had plans to invade the Muslim Caliphates, but he was provoked by the ruler of Khwarazmia and he decided to launch a full scale attack. It was not only Khwarazmia that fall down but also the rest of the Muslim territories, bringing a sharp end to the Golden Age of Islam which never returned its glory after that.
