One of the first scientists of the Renaissance to advance taxonomy through firsthand observations was Valerius Cordus.

Valerius Cordus (1515-1544) was a German scientist and physician who wrote one of the most complete books with medical directions on his time. He also identified and classified many plants and herbs that served to elaborate its medical directions. sergejj [24]
The main competing arguments in the Webster-Hayne debate----which took place between Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Senator Robert Y. Hayne of South Carolina--were over protective tariffs in the United States, with one side arguing that states had a right to nullify laws they deemed unconstitutional, and the other argued that the Union needed to be protected at all costs.
