The progressive era lasted between 1890 and 1920. It was a period when the economy of the United States experienced a major boom. Many people from the south and Eastern part of Europe massively moved to the United States.

As a result of the massive movement, major cities were congested and the large numbers of the people living below the poverty line were greatly affected. Most of the politicians in major cities exercise their power through political groups. Also, during the progressive era, the nation's economy was in the hand of the industries and as a result, the industries created monopolies.

At that period, the situation of the United States worried some groups of people who felt that a change was required to protect the right of the people. Different people rose to challenge the status quo, they regarded themselves as reformers and form a group in a bid to change the society. The group formed during that era was called the progressive movement.

However, the progressive movement ignored the plight of African Americans; African Americans were confronted with racism and different form of segregation.  

However, in a bid to addresses some of the injustices facing African Americans in that era, a team of African Americans also team up to form a movement. The movement was made up of Africa American.
