The Department of Homeland Security was created in order to protect the Americans from terrorists threat. The Department of Homeland Security works in order to prevent terrorists from using weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear, radiological,chemical,biological etc.

Preventing the United States from future terrorists attack is One of main reason the department of homeland security was established by President W.bush.

He created the department after the country was attacked on September 11, 2011.  DHS was set up as an agency to protect the United States from future attacks.  

Some of the responsibility of the DHS include aviation control, border control, cyber-security and emergency response.  

Tom Ridge, Pennsylvania Governor was appointed by the US president as the first director of the office of department of homeland security.

The agency was saddled with the responsibility of coordinating national strategy that will prevent the United States from terrorists attack as well response to any attack in future.  

In 2012, the congress passed the homeland security act and the department fully became a cabinet-level department.  

However, 22 different department and agencies were combined to form the Department of homeland security.
