The main subject matter of the poem “<em>Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?</em>” by Thomas Hardy is the evaluation of Death in society.

Hardy considers Death as another part of human nature, therefore love neither aversion can't withstand it.

In the poem, the widower has remarried, "<em>he went to wed one of the brightest wealth</em>"; he moved on to a richer woman, he's marrying someone else inasmuch as his wife is dead, thus he cannot longer annoy her.
