The Russian army refused to directly engage the French in combat. Instead they harassed the French and burned to the ground anything that could be used to supply Napoleon's forces. When the extremely bad weather set in, the French supply lines were unable to deliver the needed materials Napoleon. He was later forced to retreat due to this crippling lack of resources.
