After the death of Trajan, his adopted son Hadrian came into the throne. Hadrian was said to be successful in managing the vast territory of the empire which his father conquered during his reign.
However, Hadrian had very little interest in territorial conquests unlike Trajan or other previous rulers. His motives usually revolved around the prosperity and development of his subjects.
Thus, he gave up the policy of extensive territorial conquests and returned the lands that was captured by Trajan and rulers before him.
