The Mughals, who ruled over the Indian subcontinent, created one of the world's great empires. Babur was the first Mughal ruler. He invaded from central Asia in 1526, and his descendants then ruled for over 200 years.
Babur succeeded his father as ruler of the state of Farghana in Turkestan when he was only 12, although he was swiftly deposed by older relatives. Babur moved into Afghanistan in 1504, and then moved on to India, apparently at the invitation of some Indian princes who wanted to dispose of their ruler.
The Mughal dynasty was founded in 1526 when Babur, a Central Asian Muslim prince, followed the example of his ancestor Timur.
