Arsat keeps insisting that he loves his brother because Arsat feels tremendous guilt for what has happened. When fleeing the pursuers, he does not wait for his brother as originally planned and turns his back on his cries. He betrayed his own brother for the woman he loves and he ends up losing both, causing great sadness. He states early in the story that he is not a whole man because his love has half of his heart, supposedly a way to convince himself that he was not man enough to save his brother.
