Lithography (from the Greek lithos, e-graféin spelling, writing) is a type of engraving that involves creating marks (or drawings) on a matrix (limestone or metal plate) with a greasy pencil. The basis of this technique is the principle of repulsion between water and oil. Unlike other engraving techniques, lithography is planographic, that is, drawing is done by accumulating fat on the surface of the matrix, rather than through cracks and grooves in the matrix, such as woodcut and metal engraving. His first name was "polyautography", meaning the production of multiple copies of original manuscripts and drawings.
