Though many Britons were converted to Christianity, some pagan practices still persisted. Among these were the adoration of trees, wells and stones.  These were later prohibited by the Church but continued to be practiced for a long time.  Some believed that was also due to the influences of people from Scandinavia who came to settle in England.
