Read the following passage, which is modeled after an encyclopedia entry about tortillas. A tortilla is a round flatbread that a

ppears in most Mexican dishes, including tacos, enchiladas, and tostadas. Tortillas are made with cornmeal or sometimes wheat flour. Traditionally, the corn or wheat grains are ground on a stone. Next, the meal from these grains is formed into small pieces of dough and patted into thin circles by hand. Finally, the tortilla is baked on a griddle. Today, tortilla dough is usually mixed by machine, flattened into shape, and passed on a conveyor belt to cook over a flame. Tortillas can be purchased at most major grocery stores. The purpose of this passage is to provide instructions on how to make tortillas; therefore it is an instructive type of text. One of the most common types of instructive texts is recipes. Recipes indicate step by step how to make a specific food. In this example, we can see how sequence connectors “next” and “finally” add cohesion to the text and relates the previous step with the other.

In To Kill A Mockingbird chapter 7 Jem has two watches: the one from the tree and the one from his father. What kinds of symbols
Ugo [173]

Answer: The two watches symbolize the children's connection with both their father and Boo Radley. Moreover, the watch that Atticus gives to Jem is an attempt to establish trust between a father and a son.

Explanation:

The story of <em>"To Kill a Mockingbird"</em> is centered around the Finch family, which consists of a father, Atticus, and his two children, Jem and Scout. In the fictional town of Maycomb where they live, rumors are circulating about a mysterious neighbor who never leaves his house, Boo Radley. Having heard these stories, the children are afraid of him, but it later turns out that he is a kind person who helps Scout and Jem when they are attacked.

Radley leaves various presents for Scout and Jem in a tree, among which is the watch. This is his way to connect with the children and prove them that he is trustworthy, since he cannot approach them directly due to all the rumors surrounding him. Similarly, Atticus gives Jem the pocket watch that has been passed down from generation to generation in the Finch family. With this gift, Atticus shows him that he trusts him enough to give him this family treasure. This present indicates that Jem has grown up and matured.

Identify the sentence that lacks parallel structure
schepotkina [342]

Answer:

Explanation:

Subtle!

You have to read the material carefully and watch the verb tenses. You should keep them all the same. Not only are the phrases parallel, they are also correct. So all except B obey that rule.

Read what she can do in B.

  • Run the Hurdles
  • Throwing the Javelin
  • Running in the Relay

The last two are participles of their parent verb forms. Run is a simple present.  Run disagrees with the other two and the sentence therefore requires revision.

The others are correct and parallel.
