During the time he led China, Mao Zedong was mostly seen in a positive light. This is because three main reasons:

  • He had been the revolutionary winner of the civil war, and as a result, was seen as a hero.
  • He had almost total control over the government while he was alive.
  • The Chinese Communist Party had a powerful and effective propaganda branch. The propaganda was mostly succesful in shaping the views of the people.

After his death, the figure of Mao Zedong became to be seen in a more complicated light. The new party leaders were respectful or Mao Zedong, but also had differences with him. They used the propaganda of the Party to shape the views of the people in a more similar manner to theirs.
