Dewey's theory is part of what is called progressive education. One of its main goals is to educate the child as a whole. What matters is growth - physical, emotional and intellectual.
The principle is that students learn better by performing tasks associated with the content taught. Manual and creative activities gained prominence in the curriculum and children were encouraged to experiment and think for themselves.
