Text at the beginning of an essay or report is called an “introduction,” and it usually lays out the author’s thesis - or central point - and the ways they intend on supporting it over the coming pages and paragraphs.

Text at the end is called a “conclusion”. It’s typically the place for an author to restate their thesis, and sometimes to add some new insight to the thesis in light of the evidence the reader has just gone through.
