Answer:

The type of context clue in the sentence that can be used to determined the meaning of guile is:

D. an inference.

Explanation:

Context clues are hints we can find in a sentence or in a passage that help us understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word. In the sentence we are analyzing here, there are no definitions, synonyms, or antonyms to be found whatsoever. The only thing we can do is infer the meaning of guile, and that can easily be done by taking the first part of the sentence into consideration.

The speaker tells us that Andrea's opponent was honest. Then, the speaker connects this part of the sentence to next one by using the conjunction "but", which expresses a contrast. That means: if the opponent was honest but Andrea used her guile, guile is the opposite of honesty. And that inference would be right! As a matter of fact, guile means cunning or sly intelligence.

Why do speakers emphasize particular words and phrases?
Colt1911 [192]

Answer:A. To make the language more memorableWhen speakers emphasize particular words and phrases, they do this to make what it is they are saying more memorable. In writing, this is done through italics. Thus, when we see writing that has certain words italicized, this is done to emphasize/make content more memorable. For instance, let’s look at two sentences (one without any italicized/emphasized words and one with):The dog was drenched. The dog was drenched. The italicized word calls attention to itself. If spoken/read, “drenched” would be emphasized, and as we can see, written or spoken, this has the effect of helping to make the emphasized word more memorable.
