They are flooded and drained by salt water brought in by tides.  They are called salt marshes because the sand seemed to be marshy because the soil perhaps composed of peat and deep mud. Peat is waterlogged. It is root-filled and very spongy. Frequent submerging of salt marshes by tides which contains plenty of decomposing plant material, levels of oxygen in the peat could be very low. </span>
