Foreshadowing is a technique in which a piece of information is given to the audience that will later on unfold into something more important, even if it seemed trivial in the beginning. In the story "A Relay Race to Remember", readers are told that Malik's ankle is injured and, as he and his team compete, it is getting worse. Right from the get-go, the narrator lets us know that Malik has begun to limp. Later on, his ankle is compared to an old tree branch and to pretzel in the sense that it feels painfully fragile.
That information, along with the knowledge that the final race is coming, serves as foreshadowing to the climax. Readers can already predict Malik will probably choose not to swim when they are told it is a relay race and there is an alternate swimmer. Since readers are aware of how much pain Malik is feeling, they can assume he'll either try to race and lose due to the pain, or he'll let Sean swim in his place. When the narrator makes it clear that Sean has been practicing a lot to improve his skill, it is made obvious that choosing him is the most logical solution for Malik's dilemma.
The author in "A Relay Race to Remember" uses foreshadowing by showing that Malik's ankel is paridly getting worse. By Malik's ankel getting worse, Sean has to take over and swim his side to win. Sean has doubted himself because he isn't as fast or good of a swimmer as Malik is. To conclude, Sean wins the race from practicing and giving himself determination.
