They did not require fluent Latin, and Byzantium did not see the emperor as the ultimate religious authority since they adopted Christianity.

This leaves the laws and traditions to be the only similarity here and that is true not only for Byzantium but many other European kingdoms. When Byzantium fell many countries around Europe took their laws and applied them to their kingdoms.
