How did the fall of Fort Sumter lead to war?

History

Answer: D. Once Fort Sumter fell, the South was treated as a separate nation, which led to the secession of eight states.

Explanation:

Maj. Robert Anderson, Sumter’s commander, respectfully but strongly rejected a formal surrender demand, requested by the Confederates. The next morning, Confederate batteries began a 34-hour bombardment. Anderson’s ninety-man garrison were no match for the concentric fire from Confederate artillery. Offered honorable terms on April 14, Anderson surrendered the Federal fort, saluted his U.S. flag with fifty guns, and, with his command, was conveyed to the fleet outside the harbor to be taken to New York City. Undoubtedly, the Confederates fired the first shot of the war and with that rash act removed many difficulties from Lincoln’s path in his efforts to preserve the Union. On the fifteenth Lincoln personally penned a proclamation declaring the seven Southern states in insurrection against the laws of the United States.

Select the the true statements about Eisenhower.
Diano4ka-milaya [45]

All these are true statements about President Dwight Eisenhower:

  • He desegregated the military.
  • He balanced the budget.
  • He cut military spending.
  • He warned of an arms race.
  • He initiated a network of multi-lane interstate highways linking cities.

The "Fair Deal" programs had been the agenda of President Harry Truman, so that's the one answer not to include in the list.

I'd like to add a word about Eisenhower's warning concerning an all-consuming arms race. His words, from his farewell speech as president, famously spoke of the "military-industrial complex."

Here's a small section of that speech, delivered in 1961:

The conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
