New England's economy was mostly based around fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. That type of economy didn't really required slaves, but instead skills, and the focus was on making the eligible population skillful in those professions. The Middle region, on the other hand, had an economy based on agriculture, mostly tobacco. As the plantations were very large, and lot of labor force was needed, lot of slaves were acquired to work on the tobacco fields.
