You forgot to mention that this question is about "The crucible".

Answer:

This means that your family prefers torture rather than loss of possessions.

Explanation:

Giles Corey is a farmer who has been accused of witchcraft and therefore taken to the Salem court. He denies the charges, but refuses to confess whether he is guilty or not, as this could cause his family to lose their property.

The penalty for those who refuse to confess was to be pressed with heavy stones. A form of torture whose main objective was to force the accused to confess. Corey was exposed to this type of torture and although he was badly hurt by the stones, whenever someone asked if he was ready to confess, he said "more weight", which culminated in his death. However, his family remained the owner of the property on which they lived, since the court had no evidence to confiscate the property

ANSWER: This means that his family will rather die by torture, instead of pleading guilty or not guilty to a witchcraft allegation.

EXPLANATION: Giles Corey was a man known for his wealth and farming business. His third wife was arrested for witchcraft accusations, later he was also attested, for the same witchcraft case, without any genuine evidence.

Giles Corey always say "more weight" during his torture. This means the sheriff should do their worst, as he is not ready to confess about his allegation. This will encourage his family not to plea to such accusation, even when their are tortured and tormented to plea.
