Exponents are abbreviations for repeated multiplication. In other words, if we have 11 6's multiplied together, we can abbreviate it with the exponent $6^{11}$ and save ourselves the trouble of writing all of the 6's out.

Now, if we have a fraction like $\frac{6^{11}}{6}$, the six in the denominator cancels one of the sixes in the numerator. That means that we have one fewer six being multiplied together, and we'll have to change our abbreviation to reflect this.

We started with 11 6's - $6^{11}$ - and we took one away - $6^{11-1}$ - so we're now left with 10 6's, or $6^{10}$.
