Answer:

Option ‘c’- the teacher called the class to order as the principal entered is an example of visual imagery.

Option ‘a’- the playground echoed with giggles, high-pitched screams, and the screech of swings is an example of auditory imagery.

Explanation:

The teacher called the class to order as the principal entered:

This is an example of visual imagery where one can visualize ‘the teacher calling the class to order’ as ‘the principal entered’.

The reader can witness a teacher standing in a classroom and shouting at the top of her voice to get the class into order as the Principal, the ultimate authority in school , enters the classroom.

The playground echoed with giggles, high-pitched screams, and the screech of swings:

The ‘giggles’ ,’high pitched screams and screech of swings’ echoing in the playground also construct mental images of a place buzzing with life.

Imagery is a literary device often employed by writers to add realism to their piece.

It refers to the use of descriptive words appealing to any of the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing and creating mental images so that the experience seems real and happening to the reader.

Thus , we have five kinds of imagery: visual, olfactory, gustatory, tactile and auditory.

The words used by the writer are such that make the reader share the sensory experience that the writer wants him to go through in order to make his composition closer to the real world . Imagery bestows authenticity to the written word and sustains interest of the reader in the piece. It transports the reader to a different world – that of the author.

Enid Blyton’s novels are rich in imagery. That is why they appeal to children and even adults , especially those who are fond of English delicacies.

 • Clarissa Beall somehow held the belief that she would eventually die on South High Street, as most of her life happenings had taken place on this particular street.
 • Sarah Shoaf, was fearful that a burglar would somehow spray her room with chloroform and steal her valuables. To avoid being affected by the chemical, she’d stack up all her valuables outside her room with a note to the supposed burglar that this is all she possesses, hence take it and leave.
