Share cropping began at the end of the Civil War in the year 1865. In the south US this became the primary method of farming. After the slavery ended, the black families had no other option but to accept share cropping as the means to support their family financially. Under the share cropping system, the land owner shared his land with a person who cultivated the land and produced crops. The Land owner would take a part of that crop for allowing the person to work on his land. This was like a rental payment given to the landowner by the share cropper.
