I think I mostly knew that big cities have pickpockets. There are a lot of needy people out there who will do whatever they need to to get money. I did not realize the number of people who are hurt by resisting someone stealing their items. When you resist they are more likely to be hostile which makes sense. I think that the best way to avoid being pickpocketed is to stay aware of your surroundings and the people who are near you. When I am in a very busy place, I always keep my purse zipped and to the front of my body with my hands on it at all times.
