The social structure in Japan during the feudal period was an extensive one with numerous hierarchical levels. On top of the hierarchy was the emperor. Just below the emperor were the shoguns, and below the shoguns were placed the daimyo. The daimyo were the vassals. They owned larger lands on which the people below them in the hierarchy worked on. The land the daimyo had was earned, be it because of military actions, or diplomatic skills, but they were also obligated to be loyal to the emperor and always be at his disposal.
