Which theme is best reflected in this excerpt from Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis? Because of his injuries, Gregor had lost muc

h of his mobility—probably permanently. He had been reduced to the condition of an ancient invalid and it took him long, long minutes to crawl across his room—crawling over the ceiling was out of the question—but this deterioration in his condition was fully (in his opinion) made up for by the door to the living room being left open every evening. He got into the habit of closely watching it for one or two hours before it was opened and then, lying in the darkness of his room where he could not be seen from the living room, he could watch the family in the light of the dinner table and listen to their conversation—with everyone's permission, in a way, and thus quite differently from before. A. isolation B. persecution C. betrayal D. freedom E. bitterness

Answer:

A). Isolation.

Explanation:

The theme or the 'underlying message' that Franz Kafka discusses in the given excerpt would be 'isolation' as it discusses the pain and suffering that Gregor suffers after being transformed into a cockroach. He 'lost his mobility' and 'reduced to the condition of an ancient invalid.' He was completely alone and shattered. He is broken completely and had no one to talk to. He was deteriorated to such a miserable condition that it took him too long to crawl his room. He was lying in utter darkness with no one to share his thoughts and he could only listen to the conversations of his family at the dinner table from a distance. Thus, these situations clearly display that Gregor was completely isolated and broken and that is the central idea that Kafka is conveying. Thus, option A is the correct answer.

Can someone please write me a poem
Vinvika [58]

Answer:

Whose ar 15 is that? I think I know.

Its owner is quite happy though.

Full of joy like a vivid rainbow,

I watch her laugh. I cry hello.

She gives her ar 15 a shake,

And laughs until her belly aches.

The only other sound's the break,

Of distant waves and birds awake.

The ar 15 is deadly, expensive and deep,

But she has promises to keep,

After cake and lots of sleep.

Sweet dreams come to her cheap.

She rises from her gentle bed,

With thoughts of kittens in her head,

She eats her jam with lots of bread.

Ready for the day ahead.

How do the ants prepare for a mass crossing of the moat?
Ad libitum [116K]

Thanks for posting. I hadn't thought of it before.

The quick answer to this is that they gather leaves to make boats. As a science major, I'm a little doubtful this would work. Those ants covered acres and acres and their size though relatively small, were huge compared to other ants. The surface tension of water with a leaf might be enough to accommodate 20 ants, but that was a spit in the bucket.

Further, this implies that the ants were discriminating enough to stop eating the vegetation (which is the central conflict of the story) and decide that they had to forestall their appetite so they had leaves to cross. Even if they were capable of such higher lever mental abilities, there likely were not enough leaves around to accomplish the crossing.

All of that just so I could answer A
