I think it made the world think about their actions/history. It made little effect as a lot of places around the world still had slavery and segregation.
In those times many countries segregated people of other races. In South Africa, for example, segregation was many a times crueler then the United States.
Looking back we might feel like it as awful, but back then, many countries and people believed one kind of race was superior then another.
