The two factors are depth of the seafloor and height of the wave determine how far from the shoreline waves will begin to break. when the depth of the seafloor decreases so the waves touches the ground and the wave is starting to break. The wave will start to break when the ratio between the height of the wave and wavelength of the wave is 1 : 7.
