They had to pay excessive taxes to the king. They felt that they have been paying taxes to a central authority where they had no representation.

In short, many colonists believed that as they have been not represented within the remote British parliament, any taxes it imposed on the colonists (such as the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts) had been unconstitutional, and had been a denial of the colonists' rights as Englishmen.

Many colonists felt that they ought to no longer pay those taxes, because they have been surpassed in England with the aid of Parliament, now not through their own colonial governments. They protested, announcing that these taxes violated their rights as British residents. The colonists began to face up to boycotting, or no longer buying, British items.
