An independent clause can be a complete sentence, but a dependent can not stand alone.
Here’s an example- I like to read. (Independent)

on the beach (dependent because it isn’t a complete sentence)

Independent:
Hiking is relaxing
I enjoy hiking

Dependent:
When hikers encounter wildlife
Because nature teaches us lessons
