The first concentration camps were started in in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Initially they were meant as "Refugee Camps", but when the Earl Kitchener took control of these camps, he used them as a tactic to flush out Guerrilla fighters, thousands died due to famine and disease.

During the intermediate of both World Wars, the NSDAP, better known as the Nazi Party got into the fold of power. They had a strong disproval for the Jewish population as they believed that the Jews had cost them the war through Anti - War demonstrations and other political moves. They also believed Jews were traitors for this reason, and now enemies of Germany.

Hitler, the Fuhrer of the Third Reich, had been convinced by a man named Heinrich Himmler, to start concentration camps for these traitors. However, before Heinrich Himmler got his way the Jews were kept in ghettos and not considered Germans. Heinrich Himmler, wanted to cleanse Germany once and for all. It's a common misconception that Hitler had, and acted on the idea of the camps, it was actually Himmler.

6 million Jews, and another 5 million "traitors", such as gays, political prisoners, and actual traitors died,  11 million people were killed in these camps.

Photo below is in a British Camp 1901. Her name was Lizzie van Zyl. She died later on that year at the age of 7 from typhoid fever, caused by her famine. Her final resting place is unknown.
