Why did slaves learn to read if it was outlawd by slave codes

Answer:

Slaves clearly did not embrace the laws that enforced their labor and captivity, so they did not have any reason to uphold the law.  Humans also have a natural desire to learn, so slaves desired more of an education.  They also knew this could eventually help contribute to their freedom.

Slaves didn’t follow that laws they would frequently read at night when there space masters were asleep because they knew eventually they would be free.
