ASPECTOS NEGATIVOS: 
Apesar de ser heróica a história do rompimento com Portugal, a independência do Brasil teve vários aspectos negativos: 

1º) - Foi uma independência das elites, que ganharam mais liberdade econômica e política. 

2º) - A escravidão foi mantida. Isso não foi coerente com as idéias da época, e aconteceu ao contrário do que desejava José Bonifácio. 

3º) - Para ser reconhecido oficialmente, o Brasil negociou com a Inglaterra e aceitou pagar indenizações de 2 milhões de libras esterlinas a Portugal. A Inglaterra saiu lucrando, tendo início o endividamento externo do Brasil.  

4º) - Quando D. João VI retornou a Lisboa, por ordem das Cortes, levou todo o dinheiro que podia — calcula-se que 50 milhões de cruzados, apesar de ter deixado no Brasil sua prataria e a enorme livraria, com obras raras que compõem, hoje, o acervo básico da Biblioteca Nacional. Em conseqüência da leva deste dinheiro para Portugal, o Banco do Brasil, fundado por D. João VI em 1808, faliu em 1829.
