Question Clarification:
Found the question on the internet and the opposing interpretations are only required for the poem "Mending Wall" as the other poem does not have any opposing interpretation and provides a plain narrative.
Explanation:
Concerned lines from the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost
<em>"Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
</em>
<em>That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it
</em>
<em>And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
</em>
<em>And makes gaps even two can pass abreast."</em>
<em></em>
One interpretation is the literal force of nature that shatters and shakes everything in its wake and hence, gradually damages the wall every year. The nature can be taken as the enemy of the wall.
The other interpretation is metaphorical, where the wall is the connection between the speaker and his neighbour and the distance gradually weakens this connection. So they must mend it repeatedly to keep it strong. I prefer this interpretation over the first one.
Answer:
B. looking into Miss Lottie's eyes and
seeing her in a new way.
Explanation:
What actually led to Lizabeth's revelation about what she had done is at the point she looked into Miss Lottie's eyes and saw her in a new way.
Below is an excerpt that supports that:
“For as I gazed at the immobile face with the sad, weary eyes, I gazed upon a kind of reality which is hidden to childhood. The witch was no longer a witch but only a broken old woman who had dared to create beauty in the midst of ugliness and sterility. She had been born in squalor and lived in it all her life. Now at the end of that life she had nothing except a falling- down hut, a wrecked body, and John Burke, the mindless son of her passion. Whatever verve there was left in her, whatever was of love and beauty and joy that had not been squeezed out by life, had been there in the marigolds she had so tenderly cared for."
When Lizabeth looked at the face of Miss Lottie, she saw her in a different and new way. She was no longer the witch Lizabeth knew her to be. Her eyes was filled with compassion as she saw a broken woman who stood before her. She saw Miss Lottie as an old woman whose precious possession, the marigolds have been destroyed and she was left with nothing.
At this point, Lizabeth understood the cruelty of what she has done. She discovered that the marigolds were Miss Lottie's only source of solace and beauty in a world that was ruthless and difficult.
Nowadays, people prefer living in large cities to living in small communities because of the benefits it had brought to them. In the past, there were advantages and disadvantages of living in a small community.
I believe there were three main advantages. Firstly, because they lived in a small area, everyone knew everyone well. They had good relationship between each other. Therefore, when you had problems, they would help you. Secondly, cars in a small region were not as many as in a big city so that would be less traffic accidents. Children could play safely on the street. Finally, the limitation of population made people unwilling to do crimes. Because of this, you may not have to worried about murderers.
I think the biggest disadvantage is about the facilities. For example, a big city could provide better hospitals, schools or jobs to its residents. In a small village, it was hard to find a well-paid job. Because schools in some small villages did not have enough equipment. Therefore, children could not earn as much knowledge as children lived in big cities. Besides, because people lived in a small region, they could not hide anything to their neighbors. The neighbors would know everything about you and you were not able to have a private life, it was very uncomfortable.
After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages, I prefer the advantages to the disadvantages of living in a small community.
