Historical painting reached an important place in the nineteenth century in the political project of great works of art. Through historical painting, an epic and monumental past was forged, in which the entire population could feel represented in the glorious events of history. Historical and epic paintings had the essential function of strengthening the sovereign identity of those portrayed.
