So basically it's a graphical model of the community of any environment. And if one part of the community is exterminated or gained in population to an excessive amount, then drastic consequences can happen in that community.
It is important because when it is dividing there is no way for the information to cross over to the other cell, so that is why it is duplicated before the division.
