From the 1820s to the 1840s, most immigrants that came to the United States were originally from Ireland and Germany. Irish immigrants were mostly trying to escape the famine that killed about a million Irish citizens between 1845 and 1850. In the case of Germans, they usually came to the United States looking for political and religious freedom. Many were also trying to escape the revolutions that were taking place in the German states.
